Most of the students completing their 10th standard are confused about deciding a right career path. Selecting the right course after class X is not an easy task. For a successful career, careful planning and following it up with a workable plan is needed.  Career exploration, knowledge about ones own self, decision making ability, future goals are some among the essential elements needed for a successful career planning. For deciding a potential career, one can also attend educational fairs, career guidance seminars that allows you to get in touch with several institutes and courses. They should have a persistent focus towards his or her goal and can seek the help of their teachers, parents and elders.
To obtain a strong foundation for further studies like graduation and post graduation, a good option after 10th is studying +2 or PUC. The selection of the streams in +2 depends upon the students aptitude, grade and marks. But the most important factor is one's keen interest in the subject and the purpose for selecting the course. The streams available in the PUC level are: 
  1. Science Stream with Mathematics / Biology / Computer / Bio-Math
  2. Commerce Stream
  3. Arts or Humanities Stream  
  4.  
  5.  
  6. If you are selecting science stream, you have an option to come back to commerce or arts field after PUC. There are lot of options available for students of science stream. They can either take up conventional courses such as engineering, medical, management etc. or go for many other upcoming options in the present scenario. If you are selecting commerce stream in PUC, you can have the option of taking courses in arts field at a later stage but cannot go for science field.
  7. Some other career options after 10th are -
    Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Industrial Training Centres (ITCs) : Constituted under Ministry of Labour, Union Government of India, Government-run ITIs and privately-run ITCs are training organisations which provide training in technical field. ITI courses are designed to impart basic skills needed for a specified trade like electrician, machinist, fitter, plumber, turner, welder etc. and depending upon trade, the duration of course may vary from one year to three years. After passing the course a person may opt to undergo practical training in his trade in an industry. A National Trade Certificate (NTC) in provided by NCVT (National Council for Vocational training ) in the concerned trade and to obtained this certificate one has to qualify the All India Trade Test (AITT). These people can find job openings in government sectors like Indian Railways, telecom departments etc. after qualifying a written examination.
    Indian Army : After matriculation, one can join in Indian Army to the posts of soldiers in technical trade through written exams like Indian Army Soldier Clerks Examination, Indian Army Soldier General Duty (N.E.R.) Examination, Indian Army Soldier Technical (M.E.R.) Examination, Indian Army Soldier Nursing Assistants (M.E.R.) Examination etc.
    Indian Navy : Job opportunities are available in Indian Navy as Dock Yard Apprentices, Sailors, Artificer Apprentices, etc. on the basis of written examination.
    Police Force : On the basis of physical test and written test, one can join as constable (tradesmen) in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
    Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts clerks grade examination for those who passed matriculation. For those who interested in teaching field can undergo training in diploma course for nursery and primary teachers conducted by the departments of primary education in various States. Students can join for 3 year engineering diploma courses in polytechnics. Several job oriented short term courses are available in IT sector and other fields like web designing, animation, fashion designing etc. Apart these, there are so many options, specially self employment opportunities are available for the school leavers depending upon their expertise.

    Choosing a right career option is the most vital decision in everyone's life. Students may goes through a dilemma of choosing a career after completing their 10th, 12th or graduation. Apart from the top paying and common career options such as Medical, Engineering, Management, Chartered Accountancy etc., numerous other options are available in the field of Health Care, Travel and Tourism, Media and so on. The choice of a career depends on the job prospects of the field and most certainly the interest of the candidate. Courses and Streams after 10th


1 11th and 12th PUC

This is the best and most popular choice among 10th passed students in India. After 10th, the most natural step ahead is – 10+1 followed by 10+2.

Nowadays, most jobs require Bachelor’s Degree as minimum educational qualification required. In order to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree course, you must have completed 10+2 in the first place! This shows how useful this path is!

If you are interested in following this path, you have many options available in front of you. 11th and 12th standards have three prominent streams in India. They are –
  • Arts stream
  • Commerce stream
  • Science stream

Based on your aptitude and passion, you may choose an appropriate stream and go ahead with 10+1 and 10+2 studies.

After completing 10+2, you may choose a professional course that is relevant to your stream (Arts, Commerce or Science)!

2 Diploma in Engineering courses

10th passed students may also pursue Diploma in Engineering courses! They must have had mathematics and science subjects in 10th class!

Diploma in Engineering programs are 3 years long. Various types of Diploma Engineering courses are available in India. Some of them are –
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • Diploma in EC Engineering
  • Diploma in IC Engineering
  • Diploma in Mining Engineering
  • Diploma in Textile Engineering

After completing Diploma program, candidates may secure admission directly into the second academic year of B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) or B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology) course. This entry scheme is called lateral entry.

3 ITI courses

ITI stands for Industrial Training Institute. ITIs offer job oriented training programs. The main aim of an ITI is to instill skills in students. Thus, ITIs raise a skilled workforce and helps them find employment!

ITI programs are 1-2 years long. Course duration depends upon the nature of the course. Some prominent ITI training programs are –
  • ITI Electrician course
  • ITI Plumber course
  • ITI Welder course
  • ITI Turner course
  • ITI Mechanic course
  • ITI Machinist course

4 Other vocational courses

ITIs, Polytechnic Colleges and other educational institutes are known to offer job oriented vocational courses. Such programs could be Diploma or certification courses. Few examples are –
  • Diploma in Hardware and Networking
  • Paramedical courses

5 Certificate courses

Other than the above mentioned courses, there also exists numerous certification programs, which 10th passed students may pursue. Few examples of such courses are –
  • Certificate in web designing
